Sgian Dubh Presentation Box
Created On: October 02, 2006
The box is made from reclaimed white oak and bog oak; the custom fitted insert is made with hardboard, cork, and suede cloth.
I made this presentation box for my best man. With such a small wedding party (four people, including the bride and groom), and a Scottish/Irish-themed wedding, I took advantage of the opportunity to thank him for being such a good friend and such an important part of my life over the past 20 years.
The sgian dubh is one of a pair made by Rab Gordon of Rainnea Studeo, located on the shores of Loch Ness, Scotland. It features a handle made of bog oak from the Culloden bog, a Damascus steel blade, and sterling silver fittings.
The box was made using "recycled" oak of sorts... The main part of the box is old growth white oak lumber I reclaimed from the demolition of an old farm house on our family farm. The strip inlaid into the lid is 2000 year old bog oak that comes from what used to be the original port of Londinium (modern-day London).
